International Students Flock to Tasmania

The Tasmanian University has bucked the national trend of a decline in the growth of international student enrolments.

A Federal Education Department report shows the overall growth in foreign students slowed to about 5 per cent last year, down from about 9 per cent in 2004.

But in Tasmania, enrolments are increasing.

The university’s executive director of planning and development, Paul Barnett, says cheaper rent in Tasmania is attractive to international students.

“In fact our international student numbers are significant, our growth is significantly above national trends, “he said.

“In both last year and this year we’ve experienced about 15 per cent growth in our international student enrolments.”
